Trauma Therapy Brisbane
Support to process trauma and complex trauma, at a pace that works for you.
Trauma therapy offers a structured, supportive way to work through the effects of frightening, overwhelming or repeated experiences — without being pushed to revisit them before you are ready.
What is trauma therapy
Trauma therapy is a focused form of psychological support for people affected by traumatic experiences, including post-traumatic stress (PTSD) and complex trauma. It works with the ways trauma can stay held in the body and mind — such as intrusive memories, heightened alertness, or a sense of being stuck — and supports you to process those experiences safely over time.
Rather than following a single fixed method, trauma therapy at Therapywell is paced to your readiness and draws on evidence-informed approaches matched to your needs. The foundation is safety and stability first, with the deeper processing work introduced gradually.
We also offer EMDR, a specific approach often used within trauma therapy. Click here to learn more: EMDR Therapy
How can trauma therapy help me?
A way to work through what happened, individualised to you.
Trauma can affect how you feel, think, sleep, relate to others and move through daily life. Trauma therapy provides a considered space to make sense of those effects and to reduce the hold that past experiences have on the present.
During sessions, your therapist works alongside you to build grounding and coping skills before gradually processing distressing memories and the emotions, thoughts and bodily sensations connected to them. The pace is guided by what feels manageable for you, so the work stays contained rather than overwhelming.
Support that respects your readiness at every step.
Whether your experience relates to a single event or years of difficulty, therapy can be tailored to what you are carrying and what you would like to work toward.
Who is trauma therapy for?
Trauma therapy may be suitable for adults affected by a range of traumatic experiences.
Trauma therapy may be helpful if you are living with the effects of:
Post-traumatic stress (PTSD)
Following a single overwhelming event such as an accident, assault, medical event or sudden loss, which may bring intrusive memories, flashbacks, avoidance and heightened alertness.Complex PTSD (complex trauma)
Associated with prolonged or repeated experiences, often within relationships or during childhood. Alongside the features of PTSD, it can involve difficulties with emotional regulation, a negative sense of self, and challenges in relationships.Childhood and developmental trauma
Where early or ongoing experiences continue to shape how you feel about yourself and relate to others as an adult.Grief and loss
Where a significant or traumatic loss remains difficult to process.Distress connected to past experiences
Such as intrusive memories, hypervigilance, difficulty feeling safe, or emotional responses that feel out of proportion to the present.
Every person's experience is different. A qualified therapist can talk through your situation with you and discuss whether trauma therapy is a suitable fit, and which approach might work best.
What can trauma therapy support?
Working toward a steadier relationship with the past.
Trauma therapy aims to support the gradual processing of traumatic experiences so they hold less power over the present. Depending on your goals, the work may support you to:
Process distressing memories
Working through experiences that feel unresolved or "stuck," with the aim of reducing their emotional intensity over time.Build grounding and regulation skills
Developing practical ways to manage strong emotional and physical responses.Understand present patterns
Making sense of how past experiences may be shaping current thoughts, feelings and behaviours.Work toward a more settled sense of self
Gently addressing the negative beliefs about yourself that can develop after trauma.
Outcomes vary from person to person, and trauma therapy is not suitable or recommended for everyone. What the work looks like is always shaped around you.
